You can keep the backplate on, but you will have it to put the G12 screws in place, then, you can put it back on, though, the backplate won't screw into anything (needs pcb baseplate). NZXT doesn't specifically list the 580 as compatible with the G12 but it does list the 480 which, as I've read since the 580 came out, is virtually identical in terms of PCB structure.
